Where to start

Which tamarind to plant first

UF/IFAS rates tamarind 'yes' for the Florida home landscape: a large tree (60 to 80 ft unpruned), low water needs, harvest April to June, cold damage at 28 to 32°F. Its tree fact sheet puts tamarind in zones 10A to 11 and says to grow it only where frost is rare, though one tree in West Palm Beach survived 26°F for several hours. UF/IFAS Extension in Charlotte County (2026) calls it frost-tender, says it does fairly well in south Florida, and notes the fruit varies tree to tree from sweet to tangy. Here, plan on a sheltered spot and cover while it's young.
